What are the Most Haunted Buildings in Salida?
Researched & written by local historian, Steve Chapman, founder of Salida Walking Tours and author of six books on Salida history.
Learn which types of historic buildings in Salida generate the most ghost stories, why certain properties developed haunted reputations, and why locals still debate which building is the most haunted.
Visitors often ask which building is the most haunted in Salida. The answer depends on who you ask.
Some residents point to a former mortuary. Others nominate an old hotel, a former brothel, or one of several historic commercial buildings downtown. What is clear is that most of Salida's famous ghost stories are concentrated within a few blocks of the historic district.
That concentration is not entirely surprising.
Downtown Salida contains Colorado's largest National Historic District, with more than one hundred preserved buildings dating largely from the railroad era. Many of these structures have stood since the 1880s and early 1900s. During that time they served as hotels, saloons, restaurants, boarding houses, businesses, and social gathering places.
As generations passed, stories accumulated.
Like many railroad communities of the American West, Salida experienced accidents, violence, disease, suicides, and sudden deaths during its early years. Most Western towns have stories connected to those events. What makes Salida unusual is how many reports continue to be associated with the same buildings more than a century later.
Former hotels are among the properties most frequently mentioned in local ghost lore.
Hotels naturally collected stories because travelers were constantly arriving and departing. Some guests stayed only a night while others remained for months. Historic hotels also experienced their share of deaths, illnesses, and personal tragedies. Over time, reports of unexplained voices, footsteps, apparitions, and strange encounters became attached to several of these buildings.
Former saloons generate a similar number of stories.
In railroad-era Salida, saloons served as community gathering places. Business deals were negotiated there, celebrations occurred there, and occasionally fights broke out there. Many historic saloon buildings remain standing today. Employees and patrons have reported unusual experiences in some of them for decades, contributing to their haunted reputations.

Buildings associated with prostitution also feature prominently in local folklore.
From the late nineteenth century into the mid-twentieth century, Salida maintained a well-known red-light district. While the businesses themselves disappeared long ago, many of the buildings survived. Stories connected to former brothels remain some of the most persistent in town, often involving reports of apparitions, voices, or unexplained activity.
Perhaps no category attracts more attention than buildings connected to death itself.
Throughout American history, mortuaries, funeral homes, hospitals, and locations associated with the deceased have generated ghost stories. Salida is no exception. Some of the strongest paranormal claims in local folklore are associated with buildings that once played a role in caring for the dead.
Not everyone accepts these stories, of course.
Skeptics point out that old buildings make noise. Plumbing shifts. Electrical systems behave unpredictably. Human memory is imperfect, and once a building develops a reputation, people may be more likely to interpret ordinary events as something unusual.
Yet believers counter with a simple observation.
Many reports come from people who had no prior knowledge of a building's reputation. Employees, visitors, tenants, and business owners have sometimes described similar experiences years apart. Whether those similarities represent coincidence, psychology, or something more remains a matter of debate.
Paranormal investigators have also shown interest in Salida's historic district. Several investigative teams have examined downtown buildings over the years, documenting reports and searching for evidence of unexplained activity. Their findings have only added to the town's reputation as one of Colorado's most haunted communities.
So what are the most haunted buildings in Salida?
The honest answer is that there is no universally accepted winner. Ask ten longtime residents and you may receive ten different answers. Some buildings have stronger reputations than others, but the stories are spread across much of the historic district.
What few people dispute is that Salida possesses an unusually large collection of ghost stories for a town its size. Whether those stories represent genuine paranormal activity or simply the enduring power of local folklore, they have become an important part of the city's history.
More than a century after the railroad arrived, the buildings remain. And so do the stories.
