Some residents point to a former mortuary. Others nominate an old hotel, a former brothel, or one of several historic commercial buildings downtown. What is clear is that most of Salida's famous ghost stories are concentrated within a few blocks of the historic district.

That concentration is not entirely surprising.

Downtown Salida contains Colorado's largest National Historic District, with more than one hundred preserved buildings dating largely from the railroad era. Many of these structures have stood since the 1880s and early 1900s. During that time they served as hotels, saloons, restaurants, boarding houses, businesses, and social gathering places.

As generations passed, stories accumulated.

Like many railroad communities of the American West, Salida experienced accidents, violence, disease, suicides, and sudden deaths during its early years. While the businesses themselves disappeared long ago, many of the buildings survived.
